Investing in the Next Generation: Megan’s work experience
Four weeks ago, I started my work experience at This Is Fever. Somehow, I’m already at the end of it!
I was given one main task: re-create the Spotify web UI. I decided to see how far I could take it, and after around 14 days, I had a working re-creation with a selection of songs and albums, a working search bar and the relevant legal pages.
The numbers are probably the best way to describe the project:
10,158 lines of code
~726 lines per day
~112 lines per hour
~2 lines per minute
The code was approximately 85% HTML, 8.4% CSS, 4.3% PHP and 2.3% JavaScript.
The placement has given me the chance to learn far more than I expected. I worked with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, while also learning PHP, Ubuntu, DDEV, Docker, MySQL and Windows PowerShell.
I’ve learned that development isn’t just about writing code. A lot of it is problem-solving, figuring out why something isn’t working and finding a way to fix it.
After finishing the Spotify project, I started teaching myself PHP with help from the development team, which has been a great way to learn.
Once I’d completed my main task, I decided to use my remaining time to start a project of my own.
I’ve always found organisational apps and dashboards frustrating. They can have adverts, paid features and not many ways to change things, so I decided to build something that works the way I want it to.
I called it Orbit – my own personal, customisable dashboard.
After just two days of development, it already has a working weather feature, calendar and plenty of other features. It’s something I plan to keep developing long after my work experience ends.
Honestly, I’m not sure where the time went.
In four weeks, I’ve completed a major project, written over ten thousand lines of code, learned several new technologies, started learning PHP and begun building a project entirely from my own idea.
Thank you to everyone at This Is Fever, especially the development team, for being so welcoming and for helping me throughout the placement. Being able to work alongside people with real industry experience has been an amazing opportunity, and I’ve learned a huge amount.

I’m finishing my placement with new skills, a completed Spotify web UI re-creation and a new project I’m genuinely excited to continue building.
